STORE HOGGS
Several returning customers ringside keen to keep fields and sheds full ensured all classes and types of store hoggs were a competitive trade with all sold today averaging £101.28.
Strongest pens of continental x hoggs £125 upwards with a top of £139. Nice farming medium types £110-£122 with smaller longer keeping hoggs £88-£105. Mules to £125, Cheviots to £123, Swaledale to £114, Rough Fell to £102 and Herdwicks to £80.
The next sale is Thursday 12th February with a large entry required to satisfy buyers requirements.
BREEDING SHEEP
Buyers keen to secure additional and replacement stock with a full ringside of buyers in attendance, with many leaving with empty trailers and keen to return to the next sale in a fortnight.
Today’s sale topped at £310 for 2 crop Black Texel cross ewes due March from M Houghton, Cabus. Aged Mule ewes scanned at 207% to a Texel from O & H Melling, Kirkham sold to £265 with other pens £260, £255 twice, £250, £240. Several flock dispersals and reductions saw GR Wilson, Natland sell mixed aged Mules scanned at 200% at £255 with others £250, £245 and 1 crop Mules £255. Texel cross ewes to £215. J & E Lancaster, Ulverston sold 2/3 crop Mules to £245, £235 and crossbred ewes £175. Aged Mule ewes from J Taylor, Brigsteer sold to £235. A consignment of in lamb Mule hoggs from J & C Wright, Airton sold to £200. Herdwick shearlings scanned at 150% sold at £120.
Next sale for all classes of breeding sheep is Thursday 12th February to include several consignments of Mule and Texel cross ewes from local farms.
